Chapter Seven

Jacob turned in his chair to see Garrett coming toward them—and Garrett’s hostile expression morphed instantly into something borderline friendly. Jacob got up. “Garrett. Hey.”

“Jacob.” The men shook. When Jacob sat back down, Garrett took the chair Nell had left vacant.

Cami regarded him across the table. She was so glad to see him here—and yet suspicious, too. Something strange was up with him, scowling one minute, then putting on a smile. She just didn’t get it. “No dinner with the carpet guy, after all?”

Garrett answered offhandedly. “Yeah, didn’t happen.”

Jacob frowned and glanced back and forth between her and the infuriating man across the table. “Carpet guy?”

“Cami wanted me here tonight.” Garrett’s gaze stayed locked with hers. “But I had a business dinner.”

Wanted? Well, yeah. She had. She did. But the way he said it made it sound like she’d begged him to come.

She glared right back at him. “I invited you.”

“Because you wanted me.”

This was getting really weird. Cami felt angry and kind of turned on, both at once. She really had no idea what to say next.

And poor Jacob. He looked like he just wanted out of there. Fast. Cami so didn’t blame him.

“Okay, guys.” Jacob put up both hands. “Is there something I’m missing here?”

Cami tried a laugh. It came out sounding strained. “Garrett and I are good fr—”

“Cami and I live together.”

Talk about a conversation stopper. Cami actively resisted the burning need to give him a good, sharp kick under the table. Could he be any ruder? Let alone more confusing?

Above his beard, Jacob’s cheeks had flushed dark red. Apparently, he really had been flirting with her. And now Garrett had made him feel like a fool. “Look, guys. I’m not here to make any trouble. Nell didn’t tell me you two were a couple.”

Garrett gave a lazy shrug. “You know Nell. She loves to stir things up.”

Cami should have jumped in right there and insisted that Nell hadn’t stirred anything up and she and Garrett weren’t a couple. But then again, being with Garrett was just what she wanted, so denying that they were a couple would be counterproductive to her own heart’s desire.

In the end, she said nothing. She just sat there with her mouth shut, feeling all turned around, half of her gleeful that Garrett seemed to be claiming her. And half of her pissed off that he had to be such a complete douchenozzle about it.

Jacob had had enough. “Looks to me like the two of you need to talk.” He stood.

Cami gazed up at him. He seemed like such a good guy, with his kind eyes and that gentle, friendly way he had. She liked him—but he wasn’t Garrett. And she and Garrett really did need to talk. “Great to meet you, Jacob.”

The big man gave a nod and left them alone. The minute he was gone, Garrett shifted to stand. “Want another drink?”

“Don’t you dare run off now.” She pinned him with her hardest glare until he sank back into the chair.
